Success Story
”...After graduating from undergrad, I decided to take a bit of a break from school, and I felt like I needed a change of scenery. I was already familiar with AmeriCorps, as many students from my department pursued AmeriCorps post-graduation, so I decided to look into it for myself. I came across the Literacy AmeriCorps of Palm Beach County program and I was hesitant to apply at first because my background was in sustainability science -- not literacy or education. However, I was ...

My decision to join Literacy AmeriCorps came after a long period of dissatisfaction with my professional life. Joining the program meant turning my back on a path I had spent the entirety of my young adult life crafting — a legal career as a JAG for the US Armed Forces. Inspired by the testimonials I had read and the alumni I had met during my research into the program, I decided to enter into unfamiliar territory and become a part of the Literacy AmeriCorps team. I knew instantly that I had made the correct choice.
I spent the 2022-2023 year at the Mandel Public Library as an ESOL/Digital Literacy Instructor. My role involved serving primarily adults in need of English language learning assistance and those interested in acquiring technological proficiency. It was here that I gained an appreciation for education and the responsibility that educators play in enabling students to succeed. I also spent a significant amount of time volunteering with the Village Readers Family Education program in Delray Beach on weeknights, helping with their adult ESOL evening classes. The time I spent with the adults at Village Readers greatly contributed to my decision to join their service site during the 2023-2024 year. I had the privilege of continuing to foster my relationship with the adults I had helped previously while also being able to assist their children during the day as a Reading Tutor.
My time with Literacy AmeriCorps was nothing short of life-changing. As a member, I experienced demonstrable growth in my students, my colleagues, and myself on a daily basis. It is with this program that I had the happiest moments of my life thus far, and I attribute my newfound optimism for the future to the time I spent here. I will be commissioning into the United States Army as a Logistics Officer, still maintaining a version of the dreams I had before leaping into this program. This time, however, I will be moving forward as a more humble, open-minded, and understanding individual. I am prepared more than ever before to serve my country with the same enthusiasm I had when serving my community.
