BOYNTON BEACH, FL: The Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County is pleased to announce funding received for two afterschool literacy programs called “Stories and STEM” and “Read! Lead! Succeed!” made possible with support from Prime Time Palm Beach County, Inc., which receives significant funding from the Children’s Services Council of Palm Beach County.

The Stories and STEM program is designed to excite children and youth about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), build on prior knowledge, promote curiosity and help children learn important cooperation and teamwork skills. Children learn that STEM is a way of thinking and exploring the world, not just a collection of facts. Each session ties literacy and science together. Participants engage in fun, hands-on activities related to a book and are introduced to creative minds, both famous and lesser-known, who can serve as role models to interest children in STEM careers. Stories and STEM is provided in one-hour sessions to children in kindergarten through fifth grade. A site can request up to six different sessions each semester or in the summer.

The Read! Lead! Succeed! program empowers children through reading, discussion and literacy-based activities. Live and pre-recorded virtual lessons with accompanying literacy kits engage youth in making use of the written word and spoken language to enhance self and social-awareness while improving emotion management skills. Through literacy-based and guided social and emotional hands-on activities and experiences, youth become more caring individuals with increased concern and respect for themselves and others. Instructional virtual sessions and literacy kits are available to individual youth, as well as youth in out-of-school time settings.

“We are grateful for the support of Prime Time Palm Beach County, Inc., and the Children’s Services Council,” said Kristin Calder, Literacy Coalition CEO. “We are proud to be able to deliver these innovative and important programs even more so now in challenging times when students need us most.”
