JOIN THE LITERACY COALITION OF PALM BEACH COUNTY FOR READ FOR THE RECORD ON OCTOBER 22
BOYNTON BEACH, Fla., Oct. 6, 2015 —The Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County invites the public to participate in Jumpstart’s 2015 Read for the Record on October 22. The national celebration, coordinated locally by the Literacy Coalition, seeks to break a world record each year by involving thousands of adults in reading the nationally selected book on a single day to the most children ever.
This year’s book, Not Norman: A Goldfish Story by Kelly Bennett, is a light-hearted tale of a little boy who finds a friend in an unexpected place. The campaign is funded locally by the PNC Foundation.
The Literacy Coalition is hosting a public celebration at the Barnes & Noble in Boynton Beach, located at 333 Congress Avenue, beginning at 10:00 a.m. on October 22. The morning will kick off with a reading of the book by NewsChannel 5’s Tania Rogers followed by hand-on activities for kids, including a visit to the adjoining PetSmart for a presentation with real fish and a pet scavenger hunt!
In support of last year’s Read for the Record, the Literacy Coalition coordinated 528 adults to volunteer and Read for the Record to 12,000 children in Palm Beach County. Mayors and public officials also contributed to the record breaking event: 173 officials and staff members from 19 municipalities read at 95 childcare centers to 5,775 children. The Literacy Coalition also arranged for 78 Palm Beach County Fire Rescue members from 26 stations to read in 34 locations.
The Literacy Coalition extends its thanks to its Read for the Record partners the PNC Foundation, The Palm Beach Post, the Palm Beach County Library System, Barnes & Noble, and Petsmart.
About the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County
For 25 years the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County has worked to improve the quality of life in our community by promoting and achieving literacy. One in seven adults in our county is unable to read and understand information found in books, newspapers and manuals and nearly half of all third graders are not reading on grade level. Through extensive outreach and collaboration with a network of community partners, the Literacy Coalition strives to ensure that individuals who need to improve their literacy skills receive the help they need. By providing services to more than 27,000 adults, children and families each year, the Literacy
Coalition’s goal is for every child and every adult in Palm Beach County to be able to read.
